The word Matrix has a number of special meanings, stemming from the Latin word for womb (in turn from mater or mother).  A matrix can be a grid, with each location in the grid containing some information. It can also be a table showing the relationship between two categories of features that are relevant to the items in the matrix.

Many of us know the word as a film title,The Matrix. Interestingly the message of this film seemed to be, "Wake up!  And so it seems we are at last waking up to algae. The exciting and important dimension in the Algae Matrix is that we don’t know the values of every cell; more are being discovered every day!
