Life Begins

Algae were amongst the first organisms on our Planet some 3 billion years ago. Other life forms became dependent on algae as these water dwellers make about 80% of the Planet's oxygen supply.

Fast Developing

The algae arena is currently one of the most exciting fields of development. The environmental challenges confronting society are also great opportunities and algae products offer a means to overcome these challenges whilst enhancing our lives.

Algae are poised to enter into our mainstream life in a big way. Recently we heard how both the public and private sector are investing a lot of money to develop the industry. For instance, the Department Of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has dedicated $50 million to research and develop algal biofuels.

NASA is interested in production of algae-based fuel and Spirulina has been proposed by both NASA and the European Space Agency as a primary food that could be grown during long space flights. Exxon announced in 2009 that it would spend $600 million in research into algae production that could be used for transport fuels.

BP is also joining the algae fuel club and investing $10 million.  Meanwhile, Solazyme a California-based startup company, uses yeast and fermentation to grow its algae. Solazyme is working with Chevron, the second largest oil producer in the United States. Sapphire Energy, a company funded by Bill Gates’ investment firm, also plans to turn algae into automobile fuel.
